“I think I’ll call Zane and see if he’s heard of a witch using hybrid plants to kill,” I said as Alex drove out to Lolita’s cottage.

Zane was my partner back when I worked as a detective for PADA—the Paranormal Apprehension and Detention Agency. His new partner, Kara Hilder, was a Valkyrie who once worked with Alex back in Seattle.

Zane picked up on the third ring. “This is Zane. How are you, Shayla?”

I put him on speakerphone. “Hey, Zane. I’m good, thanks. We have a weird case here on the island. I don’t suppose you’ve heard of a witch or fairy who uses hybrid plants to do his or her killing have you?”

“Can’t say I have,” Zane said. “What kind of plant are we talking?”

“A welwitschia’s body and a Venus flytrap head.”

Zane whistled. “Brutal. How many have died?”

“I have two witches dead, and according to the oracle witch who was just murdered, GiGi is next.”

Zane cursed softly. “I haven’t heard of anything like this, but I’ll call PADA and see what I can find out.”

“Thanks, Zane.” I cleared my throat. “I owe you one.”

“You just make sure you keep that sassy GiGi safe.”

“I will.” I disconnected and shoved the phone inside the pocket of my uniform. “Hopefully, we’ll learn something from PADA.”

We bumped along the rutted path until we couldn’t go any farther. Stepping out of the Blazer, I turned to see Grant’s and Doc’s vehicles pulling to a stop behind us and parking. Finn waved as she stepped out of Doc’s van.

“I’ll stay here like last time,” Needles said, “and keep an eye out for any kudzu or hybrid plant on a mission to kill.”

“I can’t believe someone killed the oracle witch,” Finn said as she sidled over to me. “I spoke to Mom this morning to see if there’s been any buzz in the fairy community, and she said the only talk is that of fear. If it’s a fairy, no one is talking.”

I conjured up a machete in case I needed it to cut through the vines as we headed toward the cottage. To my surprise, more of the house was visible than it had been earlier. A lot of the kudzu had withered and died off.

“Does this mean without the magic summoning it to kill,” Grant said next to me, “the kudzu will just die?”

I shrugged. “Looks like it. That’s one relief, I guess.”

Doc cleared his throat as we neared Lolita’s place. “I just hope the elements and wild animals haven’t done too much damage to the body.”

“Let’s go around back,” Alex said. “That’s where Lolita is.”

As the five of us rounded the corner, I couldn’t help but wonder if Doc was right. Would we find Lolita in worse shape than when we left her? If so, I wasn’t sure how I could forgive myself. It was imperative we flee when we did, but that didn’t seem fair to Lolita and her body. I shouldn’t have worried though. Standing guard in a circle around the body were numerous rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, foxes, beavers, and deer.
